Acid-Base Scenarios
The Acid-Base station starts off with a structured acid-base interpretation of bedside blood tests (pH, pCO2, standardized plasma HCO3, base excess, Na, K, Cl, lactate, glucose). Values are given in different units so as to be familiar to all participants. The session then delves into the initial management of various conditions that cause acid-base disturbances, e.g. hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome, poisoning with toxic alcohols.
Acid-Base Interpretation
The EMCC teaches a structured bedside approach to acid-base interpretation using the physiological approach, with an emphasis on use of the anion gap.
